John Steinbeck
John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902. He attended but did not graduate from Stanford University (1920-1926). While writing, Steinbeck took odd jobs, he worked as a painter, caretaker, watchman, surveyor and fruit picker.
Working as a watchman of a house in High Sierra, Steinbeck wrote his first novel, Cup of Gold (1929). He received a $250 advance from his publisher.
Steinbeck was married three times. His son John had problems in later years with drugs and alcohol and died in 1991.
Steinbeck was a natural storyteller and was able to capture the feelings of working people who were the central characters of his most important novels. John Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. He is best remembered for The Grapes of Wrath (1939). In 1943 Steinbeck moved to New York City and spent his summers in Sag Harbor.
John Steinbeck died of a heart attack on Dec.20, 1968.
